Laughing About “Little Rocket Man”
In a recent interview at the Toronto Film Festival, Elton John offered his perspective on Donald Trump’s famous designation of Kim Jong Un as “Little Rocket Man.” John admitted he found the nickname hilarious and clever, lauding Trump’s wit.
“I laughed, I thought that was brilliant. I just thought, ‘Good on you, Donald.’ Donald’s always been a fan of mine, and he’s been to my concerts many, many times,” John said.
His comments come as the former president embraces new support from former Democrats in the Robert F. Kennedy Jr. camp, and as other high-profile names like Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg express their generally positive views of the former president.
John’s appreciation did not stop at enjoying a good laugh. He acknowledged Trump’s frequent attendance at his concerts and expressed gratitude for the support.
Trump’s use of the “Rocket Man” nickname during a diplomatic crisis in 2017 and subsequent meetings in 2018 and 2019 was one of the defining moments in U.S.-North Korea relations.
John highlighted an interesting personal perspective, noting that he was unsurprised that Kim Jong Un was unfamiliar with his music, as he has never toured North Korea.
“Of course he hasn’t heard of me, Kim Jong Un. I’ve never toured North Korea, and I have no intention of doing so,” John stated.
Reflecting on the lighthearted nature of the nickname, John remarked, “I thought it was a light moment, and it was fun.”
John refrained from endorsing any candidates for the upcoming U.S. presidential election. He emphasized the importance of voting for just causes and individual rights.
“I don’t go on stage and say to people, ‘You must vote for the Republicans, you must vote for the Democrats.’ It’s none of my business how they vote,” John said.
“What I want by saying that last night … there is a danger, as Dick Cheney said the other day. America is in a very volatile position. And it’s a country I love, and I’ve always loved, and I’m so thankful that it made me who I am.”
In addition to his comments on Trump and politics, John was in Toronto for the premiere of the documentary “Elton John: Never Too Late.” Airing on Disney+ from December 13, the documentary, directed by R.J. Cutler and John’s husband David Furnish, chronicles John’s career and personal life.
