A local Florida judge is leaving the bench after an investigation found that she made hundreds of political contributions while serving on the Ninth Circuit Court.
Diana Tennis chose resignation rather than serving the final four months of her term under the shadow of discipline from the state Supreme Court.
Tennis has served Orange and Osceola counties since 2015, holding a position that demands public confidence in judicial fairness.
Her political giving, however, eventually brought scrutiny from the body responsible for investigating the conduct of judges in Florida.
The investigation into Tennis began last September.
What investigators uncovered was not an isolated contribution or an accidental donation, but a long pattern of financial support directed toward political organizations and candidates on the left.
The judicial qualifications commissioner found that Tennis contributed nearly $30,000 through approximately 900 donations.
Those contributions were made between 2016 and 2021, meaning the activity continued across several years of her judicial service.
Recipients included left leaning political organizations as well as prominent Democratic candidates.
Among the politicians receiving contributions were Joe Biden and former Sen. Bill Nelson, two familiar names within the Democratic establishment.
The sheer volume of the contributions made the matter difficult to dismiss as a minor oversight.
Roughly 900 separate donations reflect repeated political participation from someone entrusted with applying the law without the appearance of partisan preference.
Judges are expected to protect confidence in the courts, particularly when politically charged disputes land before them.
When a sitting judge sends tens of thousands of dollars toward one side of the political aisle, the public is entitled to ask uncomfortable questions.
The case reached the state Supreme Court, which issued its disciplinary order in July.
The court ordered a suspension, a fine, and a public reprimand in response to the findings concerning Tennis and her political contributions.
Those penalties would have placed the controversy directly before the public while Tennis remained in office.
Rather than proceed under that discipline and finish her term, Tennis submitted her resignation and ended her service early.
Her departure means she will not serve the remaining four months of her term.
It also closes a judicial tenure that began nearly a decade ago with an ethics controversy tied directly to partisan political giving.
The resignation does not erase the investigation or the findings that prompted the state Supreme Court to act.
It simply removes Tennis from the bench before the ordered discipline could become the defining final chapter of her current term.

Public confidence cannot rest on assurances alone when the financial record reveals extensive support for political candidates and ideological organizations.
An attorney representing Tennis defended her record and described the resignation as a retirement.
The attorney told WESH 2, “Judge Tennis is an outstanding Judge who has diligently served the central Florida community with distinction for many years. Her retirement is a loss for the community.”
That statement offered glowing praise but did not address the nearly $30,000 in contributions, the approximately 900 donations, or the discipline ordered by the state Supreme Court.
Calling the exit a retirement also does not change the sequence of events that preceded it.
Tennis came under investigation, the political contributions were documented, and the state Supreme Court ordered punishment.
She then resigned with only four months remaining in her term, leaving voters to consider how such extensive partisan giving continued for years from a sitting judge.
