A Moment of Unity

Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump momentarily put aside their political differences to stand together at Ground Zero in New York City on Wednesday morning. They were joined by President Joe Biden, former Mayor Mike Bloomberg, and Senator JD Vance to commemorate the 23rd anniversary of the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. The presence of these political figures, despite their recent contentious interactions, highlighted a rare moment of national unity and remembrance.

The service commenced at 8:30 a.m. ET, with a bell ringing at 8:46 a.m. to mark the moment American Airlines Flight 11 struck the North Tower of the World Trade Center. Another bell rang at 9:03 a.m., the time United Airlines Flight 175 collided with the South Tower. The ceremony also included the reading of the names of those who died in the attacks.

The interaction between Harris and Trump was particularly noteworthy, given their debate the previous evening. The event also saw President Biden and other public figures bow their heads in silence, paying tribute to the nearly 3,000 lives during the 2001 attack.

Harris, Biden, and Trump were also scheduled to travel to Shanksville, Pennsylvania, the site of the Flight 93 National Memorial. The itinerary included a wreath-laying ceremony and another 9/11 event at the Pentagon later in the evening.
