Sen. Ted Cruz warned that what he called a “new and dangerous red-green alliance” between communists and Islamists is gaining influence within the Democratic Party, arguing that the two movements are united by opposition to Christianity, Judaism, capitalism, the Constitution and the United States.
Cruz began his remarks by invoking the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, the killing of Charlie Kirk and the assassination attempts against President Donald Trump. He argued that the same type of hatred behind acts of political and ideological violence continues to intensify.
“9/11. Could anyone have imagined that Comrade Mandami would be the mayor of New York? The hate that killed Charlie Kirk, that knocked down the Twin Towers, that led to two assassination attempts on President Trump, it just keeps getting worse and worse,” Cruz said.
He then described the political alliance he believes is developing within the Democratic Party.
“And we are witnessing a new and dangerous red-green alliance: communists and Islamists coming together and sweeping over the Democrat Party,” Cruz said. “They are united because they share the same enemies. They hate Christians. They hate Jews. They hate capitalism. They hate the Constitution, and they hate America.”
Cruz’s remarks centered on his argument that communists and Islamists have different ideological foundations but can find common ground through shared political opponents.
The Texas senator then turned to his own family history in Cuba, explaining that his opposition to communism is rooted in what his relatives experienced under communist rule.
“It gives me no pleasure to say this. For me and my family, communism is not abstract or theoretical. My family has bled and has been imprisoned and tortured by communists in Cuba,” Cruz said.
Cruz used historical examples from communist governments around the world to support his characterization of the ideology as inherently oppressive.
“That’s what communists do, from the frozen gulags of the Soviet Union to Chairman Mao’s driving nails through the eyes of Christians, from the killing fields of Cambodia to the starvation and misery of North Korea, and Venezuela, and Nicaragua, and Cuba,” he said.
Cruz then shifted his focus from communism to Islamism, drawing a distinction through his use of the term while arguing that Islamist systems have also produced violence and oppression.
“And Islamism likewise produces murder and oppression, from the forced wearing of hijabs to the stoning of rape victims, from the systematic murder of homosexuals to honor killings and the barbarism of October 7th and 9/11,” Cruz said.
His speech placed those arguments within a broader warning about the political direction of the Democratic Party.
Cruz contended that communists and Islamists are increasingly cooperating despite their ideological differences because they share common enemies.
His “red-green alliance” characterization was also the central theme of reporting on his remarks, with coverage of the Republican convention describing Cruz as accusing the Democratic Party of being overtaken by an alliance of communists and Islamists. (ABC News)
Cruz’s comments ultimately moved from his warning about the Democratic Party to the place of Sharia law in the United States. He concluded the portion of his remarks by making his position explicit.
“Hear me now. Sharia law has no place in America.”
