Matt Gaetz Withdraws as Trump’s AG Pick
Matt Gaetz, Republican Representative from Florida and Donald Trump’s pick for Attorney General, has withdrawn his name from consideration for the position.
Gaetz resigned from his House seat almost immediately after his nomination as AG was announced, before a House ethics report about him could be finalized for release.
Gaetz has repeatedly denied any wrongdoing.
A Department of Justice investigation into allegations of sexual misconduct by Gaetz ended last year with no charges being filed against him.
Shortly before Gaetz withdrew his name from consideration, it was reported that details of the House ethics report were leaked to the New York Times.
What the future holds for Gaetz is unclear. He resigned from his House seat, and a special election is being planned to fill it.
He won reelection to that seat earlier this month, but announced that he would not take the position after being nominated for AG.
With Florida Senator Marco Rubio nominated for the Secretary of State position, there could potentially be a Senate seat in Florida coming open if he is confirmed.
Florida Republican Governor Ron DeSantis will be required to fill the Senate seat. Gaetz could possibly be a candidate for that position.
Then again, there’s this…
As for who Trump might nominate to fill the Attorney General position now, Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton is currently trending #2 behind Gaetz on X.
