CNN Presses Jeffries on Mamdani Endorsement, He Redirects to Trump

House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) declined to call socialist New York City mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani the “future of the Democratic Party” during an interview Sunday, instead pointing to himself and his leadership of the House Democratic Caucus as the party’s best path forward, as reported by Trending Politics News.

Appearing on CNN’s State of the Union, Jeffries was asked directly whether Mamdani represented the next generation of Democratic leadership.

“No, I think the future of the Democratic Party is going to fall – as far as we’re concerned – relative to the House Democratic Caucus and members who are doing a great work all across the country,” Jeffries said.

“As it relates to our need to both take back control of the House, but, in doing so, make sure that we’re communicating to the American people, like, we understand, you deserve better than the country that you have received.”

The question came just days before New Yorkers head to the polls to elect their next mayor, with Mamdani widely expected to win in a three-way race against Republican Curtis Sliwa and former Governor Andrew Cuomo, who is running as an independent.

Jeffries’ remarks were notable given his recent endorsement of Mamdani, which came only after weeks of hesitation.

He joined New York Governor Kathy Hochul and several other Democratic officials in issuing a late endorsement, while progressives such as Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) have supported Mamdani’s campaign for months.

CNN host Jake Tapper pressed Jeffries for a clearer answer. “I asked you if Mamdani was the future of the party, and you didn’t answer the question,” Tapper said. Jeffries responded by pivoting to attacks on President Donald Trump and Republicans.

“Donald Trump and Republicans have gone way too far and have failed to deliver anything meaningful for the American people,” Jeffries said.

“As Democrats, we’re going to focus on lowering the high cost of living, fixing our broken healthcare system that Republicans continue to make worse with their toxic policies, and cleaning up corruption in Congress, in the courts, and within the administration with Donald Trump running the largest pay-to-play scheme in the history of the country.”

Tapper followed up by noting that Jeffries had delayed his endorsement of Mamdani and that Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer has yet to issue one.

“Are you concerned about Republicans using him as a lightning rod so as to hurt your ability to win back the House in 2026?” Tapper asked.

Jeffries again avoided directly addressing Mamdani.

“No, the lightning rod in terms of what’s going to impact the ability of either side to win control of the House or hold control of the House in 2026 is going to be the failure of Republicans to actually deliver on the promises that they have made and to actively make life worse for everyday Americans,” he said.

The exchange comes as Democrats face growing internal divides ahead of Tuesday’s state and municipal elections in New York, New Jersey, and Virginia.

Mamdani’s candidacy has drawn national attention as establishment Democrats distance themselves from his platform while progressive leaders rally behind him.
