CNN’s Scott Jennings mocked Democratic Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (NY) after sending a “strong letter” to Trump for withholding $2.8 billion in funding for Harvard due to its alleged inaction in fighting antisemitism.
Appearing on CNN’s State of the Union, Schumer was asked by co-host Dana Bash about his response to Trump “cracking down on Harvard and other universities because of their response, or lack thereof, to those antisemitic incidents.”
“It’s going to hurt every American,” Schumer said. “It’s going to hurt the kids at the universities who’ve had nothing to do with protesting,” and also hurt “medical research and other kinds of great research” at Harvard and other Universities.
“We sent him a very strong letter just the other day asking eight very strong questions about why this isn’t just a pretext,” Schumer added.
Jennings responded by mocking the left’s utter state of helplessness to the point of believing that a “strongly worded letter” would convince Trump to change his government policy on a core campaign issue.
“Saying you are going to send a strongly worded letter in today’s political climate is roughly the equivalent of putting a slice of cheese on a frozen hamburger patty on a grill, which Chuck Schumer is famous for doing,” Jennings said.
The hamburger reference stems from a 2024 Father’s Day incident when Schumer had a “barbeque with hot dogs and hamburgers on the grill” to celebrate his daughter and her wife’s acquisition of a house with a backyard. However, netizens criticized his spatula handling skills and warned him of potential food poisoning.
“You’ve totally missed the moment,” Jennings continued. “You’ve completely and totally misunderstood the way political communications work just the way you misunderstand the way grills work. They’re not — that is not going to cut it for them.”
Netizens also had a field day with Schumer over his “strong letter” urging Trump to reinstate funding for Harvard, which sits on a $53 billion endowment.
“I cannot believe this isn’t a joke,“ replied the Onion’s contributing writer Alex Furlin. “Chuck Schumer hates you and he hates me and he hates democracy. A strongly worded letter. Unreal.”
“Pretty clear Democrats in Congress don’t actually believe Trump is a threat to the rule of law,” tweeted Independent journalist Ken Klippenstein.
Even leftists were tired of Schumer’s antics and demanded action or his resignation. Schumer still risks being primaried, and numerous Democrats across the country have called for him to step down.
“I’m tired of strongly worded letters from Chuck Schumer or him capitulating to Republicans, I want to see someone who fights like hell to save a dying democracy,” wrote another “resister.”
“I am currently drafting a strong letter, strongly and urgently asking Schumer to resign. Watch this space to see how it goes.”
“I’m still shaking my head at Chuck Schumer sending a ‘very strong letter’ to Donald Trump. This guy is gonna pull a Dianne Feinstein and never leave, isn’t he?”
