DOJ Opens Investigation into Illegal Alien Hotels in New York City

Two New York City hotels used as illegal alien shelters are now under criminal investigation, following Mayor Eric Adams’ warnings that the city is overwhelmed by the influx of border crossers and illegal aliens. The U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) is leading the investigation, probing the funding and operations of these shelters. According to Fox News, the Roosevelt Hotel and the Stewart Hotel, both used to house illegal aliens, have received federal subpoenas.

The Hotel Chandler has also been subpoenaed, though it reportedly serves as a homeless shelter rather than an illegal alien housing facility. The subpoenas mention potential violations of federal immigration law, CBS New York reported.

Authorities are requesting names and birth dates of illegal aliens connected to these locations, raising questions about how these shelters have been operated and funded.

The Roosevelt Hotel, which has served as an illegal lien intake center since 2023, has processed approximately 170,000 illegal aliens, according to CBS New York. The Fox News report noted that the city agreed to pay up to $220 million to the Roosevelt Hotel, which is owned by the government of Pakistan.

This deal was reportedly linked to a $1.1 billion International Monetary Fund (IMF) bailout intended to help Pakistan avoid defaulting on international debt, according to former investment banker and author John LeFevre. In January 2024, Adams declared that New York City was out of space to house illegal aliens, citing the arrival of over 160,000 border crossers and illegal aliens since early 2022.

More recently, an investigation by the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), led by Elon Musk, revealed that $59 million in FEMA funds had been used to house illegal aliens in luxury hotels across New York City. Musk announced the findings in March, directly contradicting previous claims from the Biden-Harris administration that FEMA was not using taxpayer money to support illegal aliens.

Former White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre had previously stated, “It’s just categorically false. It is not true,” when asked about such funding in October. Following the financial scrutiny and rising public pressure, Mayor Adams announced in late February that the Roosevelt Hotel would be shut down in the coming months.

According to Breitbart News, the Adams administration plans to redistribute services to other facilities and close 53 illegal alien shelters by June as part of the city’s effort to manage the crisis.

With federal investigators now looking into the funding and operations of these shelters, the situation continues to develop as New York City struggles to handle the ongoing surge of illegal immigration.
