Elon Musk's DOGE Uncovers More Gov't Waste: $380k for Simple VA Website Update

The Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), led by Elon Musk, has revealed that the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) paid hundreds of thousands of dollars monthly for small website updates before canceling the contract.

DOGE uncovered the highly questionable VA contract while combing through data.

“Good work by @DeptVetAffairs,” DOGE said in a post on X on Wednesday.

“VA was previously paying ~$380,000/month for minor website modifications. That contract has not been renewed, and the same work is now being executed by one internal VA software engineer spending ~10 hours/week.”

VA Secretary Doug Collins defended DOGE cuts at the VA as part of the Trump administration’s efforts to reform the department.

Earlier this year, the VA announced the dismissal of more than 1,000 employees, enabling them to redirect over $98 million per year back to service for VA beneficiaries.

Besides the dubious website maintenance agreement, DOGE continues to find waste and fraud among federal agencies.

As we reported last week, uncovered simple 10-question survey about Americans’ use of national parks, where a contractor was charged nearly $1 billion—almost a third of the department’s budget.

“We routinely encounter wastes of a billion dollars or more,” Musk noted, adding that there appeared to be no feedback loop to utilize the survey results, making it even more wasteful.

Watch:

Last week, DOGE announced the termination of 113 contracts valued at $4.7 billion, including a U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) consulting contract for climate change activities in Peru.

It also announced the cancellation of $577 million in “America Last” grants at the Department of Labor—a total of $237 million in savings.

The canceled funding included:

$10 million for “gender equity in the Mexican workplace”
$12.2 million for “worker empowerment in South America”
$6.25 million for “improving respect for workers’ rights in agricultural supply chains” in Honduras, Guatemala, and El Salvador.

So far, DOGE has saved Americans $140 billion, or $869.57 per taxpayer.
