An Egyptian national and former chaplain at a children’s hospital flagged on the FBI’s terror watchlist has been arrested by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
Federal agents arrested Ayman Soliman on Wednesday after the man, whose asylum was revoked under the Biden administration, met with both ICE and FBI officials.
Soliman, a former chaplain at the Cincinnati Children’s Hospital who also presided over services at a local mosque in Ohio, first came to the U.S. roughly a decade ago and was granted asylum status in 2018.
DHS Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin confirmed that Soliman’s asylum status “was revoked under the Biden administration.”
The DHS official also stated that Soliman “was flagged on the FBI terror watchlist,” which led to his apprehension this week.
According to court documents, members of Soliman’s family who are still in Egypt had filed a request to migrate to the United States to join him.
However, supporters of Soliman argue that he was fleeing violence and persecution in Egypt and should not be deported.
Even if those claims are found credible by the federal government, a recent Supreme Court ruling may still allow for his deportation to a willing third-party country.
The Trump administration previously deported several illegal aliens to South Sudan after the African nation agreed to accept deportees who were not native to that country.
The operation faced legal challenges, but the Supreme Court ultimately ruled in favor of the Trump administration.
The new precedent is expected to enable the deportation of thousands of illegal aliens whose home countries refuse to accept them, or who claim credible fears of torture or persecution if returned.
