Fox News host Harris Faulkner confronted Democratic strategist Fred Hicks this week, pressing him on a New York Times article that described the Democratic Party as “passive,” based on the findings of a major focus group study.
The findings were published by the Times from a Democratic researcher who interviewed 250 focus groups across the country.
According to the report, participants frequently described the Democratic Party using terms such as “sloth” and “tortoise,” while Republicans were often likened to “lions,” “sharks,” and other apex predators.
Faulkner asked Hicks to respond to the comparisons.
“People called you slow, plotting, passive,” Faulkner said.
“I mean, does that describe you as a Democrat?”
However, Hicks pivoted to criticizing President Donald Trump instead.
“Well, Harris and Jeremy, I think what we’re losing sight of right now is why we’re even having this discussion,” Hicks replied.
“And the reason we are having this discussion is that Donald Trump just pushed the Congress to pass a bill that will add over $3 trillion in debt to the U.S. Government.
He is violating due process and challenged in the courts and courts ruling against him left and right including trying to tell institutions of higher education how to manage their business.”

Hicks continued:
“So the whole reason why we’re here is because Donald Trump is leaving a cavernous opening for Democrats and Americans to step forward.
The other thing—if it was a Democrat doing [the] things Donald Trump is doing, Republicans would be up in arms. My philosophy is—”
Faulkner interjected and returned to the original question.
“Well, well, hold on a second. You have plenty of time to be up in arms, but you’re all focusing on—you’re navel-gazing and focusing on yourselves trying to fix it, that fake humility,” Faulkner said.
“Look, that is a catch phrase that Jeremy [Hunt] came up with, but you have got to call it for what it is. What it is, is you have a lot of complaints about Donald Trump, but you’re not doing anything to go forward other than lawfare.”
The exchange followed passage of a major budget reconciliation bill, which reflected President Trump’s long-standing economic agenda, including the permanent extension of the 2017 tax cuts and the elimination of federal taxes on tips and overtime pay.
Hicks defended his party’s legal strategies and efforts to appeal to voters.
“Lawfare? What we’re doing is looking at how to take advantage of this opening and so we can fight for Americans,” Hicks said.
“Again, unfortunately with this big, beautiful bill—”
Faulkner interrupted again.
“Which Americans, the rich Americans?” she asked.
“God love us all. You ignore the average people.”
