Jackson Lee represented Texas’ 18th Congressional District since 1994, becoming a prominent voice on issues of racial justice and civil rights. She was among the lead sponsors of legislation to establish Juneteenth as a federal holiday and frequently accused the police of brutality.



Throughout her career, Jackson Lee was known for her progressive stances, including opposition to the Iraq War and criticism of former President Donald Trump. At the time of her death, she served as a chief deputy whip for House Democrats and vice chair of the Congressional Progressive Caucus.

Political Career and Achievements



Born in Queens, New York, Jackson Lee graduated from Yale University and served as a Houston municipal judge before entering Congress. During her tenure, she was active in promoting legislation addressing social justice, economic inequality, and public health concerns.

While her career was not without controversy, including scrutiny over ties to Enron and a lawsuit alleging staff mistreatment, Jackson Lee remained a respected figure within the Democratic Party. She recently sought the Houston mayorship, losing in a runoff, but had filed to seek a 16th term in Congress.
