Mayor-Elect Mamdani Leaving Rent-Stabilized Apartment For Historic Gracie Mansion

Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani announced Monday that he and his wife will vacate their rent-stabilized apartment in Astoria and relocate to Gracie Mansion after he is sworn into office in January, as reported by Fox News.

Mamdani, 34, said the decision was based on family safety concerns and the need to focus fully on his policy agenda.

In a Dec. 8 post on X, Mamdani wrote, “My wife Rama and I have made the decision to move into Gracie Mansion in January.”

He added that the choice was guided by “our family’s safety and the importance of dedicating all of my focus on enacting the affordability agenda New Yorkers voted for.”

Mamdani included a photograph of a miniature Gracie Mansion replica from the New York Botanical Garden’s train show, writing, “Went to the NY Botanical Garden’s train show last week, and saw our new home!”

The relocation represents a significant change from the couple’s long-time one-bedroom apartment, which became a point of contention during the mayoral campaign.

Former Gov. Andrew Cuomo criticized Mamdani for living in a rent-stabilized unit for $2,300 per month while earning approximately $142,000 as a state assemblyman.

Gracie Mansion, built 225 years ago, is one of New York City’s oldest wooden structures still in use. According to its official website, the property spans more than 10,000 square feet, includes five bedrooms, and features a grand ballroom along with views of the East River.

Mamdani said he will miss his current residence and the Astoria community, where he has lived for several years.

In his post, he wrote, “My priority, always, is serving the people who call this city home. I will be a mayor for the line cooks on Steinway, for the children swinging at Dutch Kills Playground, for the bus riders waiting for the Q101. While I may no longer live in Astoria, Astoria will always live inside me and the work I do.”

Mamdani will officially take office on New Year’s Day. Fox News Digital has requested additional information from the mayor-elect.
