President Trump put sanctuary cities on alert that he was going to implement his campaign pledge to deport illegal immigrants from the country.
Several deep blue cities are rushing to Trump-proof their sanctuary ordinances to effectively protect unlawful entrants from deportation. In December 2024, Trump’s border Czar Tom Homan threatened the Chicago Mayor with prosecution if he impeded deportations, harbored, or concealed illegal aliens.
Chicago was the target of Trump’s post-inauguration raids to apprehend dangerous illegal immigrants before details leaked out. Nonetheless, Homan confirmed that the raids would proceed following a different plan.
Denver, Colorado, Mayor Mike Johnston said he was willing to participate in “civil disobedience.” He also threatened to send Denver Police officers to stop the feds from deporting illegal immigrants and said he did not mind going to jail.
“More than us having DPD stationed at the county line to keep them out, you would have 50,000 Denverites there,” Johnston told Denverite. “It’s like the Tiananmen Square moment with the rose and the gun, right? You’d have every one of those Highland moms who came out for the migrants. And you do not want to mess with them.”
However, he later retracted the statement and advocated for negotiating “with reasonable people [on] how to solve hard problems.”
“Would I have taken it back if I could? Yes, I probably wouldn’t have used that image,” Johnston told NBC affiliate 9News.
The Denver Mayor, a vocal proponent of illegal immigration, had stated that immigration status “shouldn’t discourage someone from taking their kid to get health care, taking their kid to go to school, or driving themselves to work.”
Nonetheless, President Trump is not playing softball with Democratic mayors opposing the deportation of illegal immigrants. During his inaugural address, President Trump promised to kickstart the operation by halting all illegal entry into the country before embarking on the forceful removal of felon illegal immigrants.
“All illegal entry will immediately be halted, and we will begin the process of returning millions and millions of criminal aliens back to the places from which they came.”
Subsequently, Trump signed an executive order declaring an emergency at the southern border and designated Mexican drug cartels as terrorist organizations.
The president has frequently insisted that South American countries, and those farther away, emptied their jails and mental institutions and sent those individuals across the border into the United States.
He also promised to halt government aid for illegal immigrants which incentivizes them to enter the country unlawfully. Several Democratic cities, such as New York City, offered free hotel accommodation and meals for illegal aliens while still reeling from budget deficits and limiting services to legal residents.
Nonetheless, the embattled NYC Mayor Eric Adams ended the benefits program and promised to work with Homan and the Trump administration to ensure the removal of violent illegal aliens.
“I will fight to secure our border and oppose any handouts or incentives that encourage illegal immigration,” Trump added. “We must put Americans first and uphold the integrity of our nation.”
Denver spent over $356 million on illegal immigrants, translating to $7,900 per undocumented individual, and was forced to slash the city budget to cover the unexpected expense.
In his first term, President Trump slashed federal grants to sanctuary jurisdictions, essentially preventing the flow of American taxpayers’ money to illegal aliens.
Meanwhile, Trump’s promise to deport illegal immigrants emboldened Democratic mayors to make promises to protect illegal immigrants.
Shortly before Trump’s inauguration, Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson said he was committed to honoring the 2017 Illinois Trust Act, which prohibits local law enforcement agents from using the city’s resources to cooperate with federal agents on enforcing immigration laws.
“Chicago stands strong: regardless of the circumstances, our commitment to protecting and supporting this city remains unwavering. We will continue to fight for the justice and safety of all who call this place home.”
Others who promised to continue protecting illegal immigrants include Boston Mayor Michelle Wu, who vowed not to allow “people who are part of our economy, part of our school system, part of our community” feel they “have to retreat into the shadows.”
California cities San Diego and Los Angeles also affirmed their commitment to protecting illegal aliens. Shortly after Trump’s victory, Los Angeles, CA, formalized a sanctuary resolution preventing officials from using the city’s resources to enforce deportations, while San Diego passed a similar sanctuary ordinance.
Ironically, Americans in these deep blue states continue electing politicians who prioritize illegal aliens over legal residents who elected them.
So, the Confederate Commie Democrats of Illinois want to engage in “insurrection.” I think TRUMP knows how to deal with real “insurrection.”
