Queens Subway Slasher Arrested Following Destructive Outburst at Shelter

A man accused of slashing two riders across the face on a Queens subway platform earlier this week has been charged after police linked him to a separate incident at the homeless shelter where he had been staying, as reported by The New York Post.

Tyquan Manassa, 28, was taken into custody Thursday morning and formally charged Friday with four counts of assault in connection with the violent attack at the Union Turnpike–Kew Gardens station, according to the NYPD.

The slashing took place on Wednesday afternoon on the southbound E and F train platform.

Police said Manassa allegedly approached a 42-year-old man from behind and cut him across the forehead with an “unknown sharp object.” Moments later, he allegedly slashed a 50-year-old man across the face.

Video recorded by commuters shows both victims shocked and bleeding as bystanders tried to assist them. One commuter was seen applying pressure to one victim’s wound while making a phone call.

Both victims were transported to nearby hospitals in stable condition, police said.

Investigators were able to connect Manassa to the subway assault after he was detained at the Ward’s Island shelter, where he had been residing. Around 5:30 a.m. Thursday, Manassa allegedly caused a chaotic scene inside the facility.

According to law enforcement sources, he turned over tables, knocked down water containers and an ice machine, threw a fire extinguisher and even flipped a bed while someone was sleeping in it.

The disturbance led to police involvement, and during questioning, investigators linked him to the Kew Gardens attack.

Manassa was subsequently charged with four counts of assault related to the subway incident. Police have not released additional details about what may have prompted the attacks, and the type of weapon used remains unclear.

The slashing is the latest high-profile incident involving violence on New York City’s subway system, where several recent cases have raised concerns among riders.

While officials have not commented on whether additional charges are expected, the investigation remains ongoing.
