President Trump has proposed shipping U.S.-born serial criminals to foreign lands for incarceration for a fee. Trump was speaking at the House Republican Conference at Trump National Doral Golf Club in Florida, where he also expressed his disdain for felon illegal immigrants.
He singled out criminals who “did not necessarily come here illegally” but have been arrested “30 times, 35 times, 41, 42 times.”
“I don’t want these violent repeat offenders in our country any more than I want illegal aliens from other countries who misbehave,” Trump stated.
Trump proposed working with Congress to pass legislation allowing the deportation of U.S.-born serial offenders in large numbers. “And I say, and this is subject to getting it approved, but if they’ve been arrested many, many times–they’re repeat offenders by many numbers–I want them out of our country,” he added. “I also will be seeking permission to do so.”
Trump said removing American-born serial offenders alongside others would save American taxpayers money used in maintaining them in private prisons that cost a fortune.
“Let them be brought to a foreign land and maintained by others for a very small fee, as opposed to be maintained in our jails for massive amounts of money, including the private prison companies that charge us a fortune.”
The United States has the largest prison population per capita in the world, with a 55% reconviction rate within five years and a reimprisonment rate of 45% for years in which data was available. Additionally, another study found that country-level (federal) crimes like homicide, robbery, and illegal imprisonment were associated with recidivism, the tendency of criminals to re-offend after release. Getting these criminals out of the country could save more American lives and taxpayers’ money.
“No, let them be brought out of our country and let them live there for a while. Let’s see how they like it,” Trump added.
Ironically, many radical Leftists who support lax laws that result in notorious repeat offenders being released onto the streets, have also expressed their disdain for the country, with some expressing their desire to leave the United States after Trump was elected.
Besides saving taxpayers’ money, removing U.S.-born repeat offenders and enablers would, of course, also reduce crime rates.
Meanwhile, Trump’s Border Czar Tom Homan said the ongoing illegal immigrant raids, now on their eighth day, would drastically increase the numbers of individuals detained and target others besides national security threats.
However, Trump did not suggest countries to which the repeat offenders would likely be sent, but sending them to the cheapest countries would save Americans more tax dollars.
In April 2022, the United Kingdom and Rwanda signed the “Migration and Economic Development Partnership” to repatriate illegal immigrants to the African country. However, that deal was quashed by the UK Supreme Court because it was deemed “inhumane.”
In response, Rwanda passed the Safety of Rwanda (Asylum and Immigration) Act to avoid any legal obstacles preventing the repatriation of illegal immigrants into the country, demonstrating the country’s willingness to accept deportees.
Seemingly, many other countries would be willing to work with Trump if he could overcome the legal hurdles at home.
