Trump’s Latest Territorial Ambition: Renaming the Gulf of Mexico
The map of North America could look a lot different after four more years of Donald Trump as president.
While he still has about two weeks before he assumes office, Trump has already laid out an expansionist agenda that would make Teddy Roosevelt proud.
His latest conquest: Renaming the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America.
Trump said in a speech today that he will move to rename the body of water. “It has a beautiful ring. It covers a lot of territory. The Gulf of America. What a beautiful name. And, it’s appropriate.”
Besides renaming bodies of water to our south, President-elect Trump aims to gain territory to the north as well.
Half-jokingly, Trump recently referred to Canada as the “51st State” and Prime Minister (now resigned) Justin Trudeau as it’s “Governor”.
Although highly unlikely, Trump has kept talking about it, which has his supporters wondering if he believes it could actually happen.
Even further to the north, Trump has recently stated that he would like to purchase the island of Greenland from Denmark.
Just today, Donald Trump, Jr and a “delegation” of Americans touched down in Greenland.
Back to the south again, President Trump has vowed to return the Panama Canal to U.S. control.
When the United States built the canal in 1904, it was agreed that the US would operate and govern the Canal Zone.
In 1977, President Jimmy Carter signed away rights to the Canal Zone in a treaty, with final operational control being transferred 22 years later on December 31st, 1999.
