A North Atlantic right whale has been observed off the coast of Ireland for the first time in over a century, sparking excitement among marine biologists and conservationists.

At a glance:

  • First sighting of North Atlantic Right whale in Irish waters in 114 years
  • Whale spotted near Sliabh Liag in County Donegal by holidaymakers
  • Only 350-400 of these critically endangered whales remain worldwide
  • Experts urge caution and space if encountering the rare mammal

In a remarkable event, a North Atlantic Right whale has been sighted off the coast of County Donegal, Ireland, marking the first confirmed observation of the species in Irish waters in over a century. The sighting has generated excitement and concern among marine experts due to the critically endangered status of these whales.

Historical Significance

Pádraig Whooley, Sightings Officer with the Irish Whale and Dolphin Group, noted that the last recorded sighting of a North Atlantic Right whale in Irish waters was over 100 years ago, likely from a whaling station off Blacksod in County Mayo. This recent observation provides a rare glimpse of a species on the brink of extinction.

Conservation Challenges

With only 350-400 North Atlantic Right whales remaining worldwide, the species faces severe threats to its survival. Conor Ryan, an honorary research fellow at the Scottish Association for Marine Science, highlighted that ship strikes and entanglement in fishing gear continue to remove individuals from the dwindling population annually.

Identification Efforts

The Irish Whale and Dolphin Group has contacted the New England Aquarium, which maintains a catalogue of known North Atlantic Right whale individuals. Experts are studying footage of the whale’s distinctive markings to potentially identify the specific individual observed off Donegal.

Public Awareness and Caution

While the sighting has generated excitement, conservationists are urging the public to exercise caution. If encountered, people are advised to give the whale ample space, recognizing the rarity and vulnerability of the species.
