Coffee shops across Canada have begun protesting against President Donald Trump and U.S. tariffs by renaming the Americano coffee to Canadiano.
Tensions between the U.S. and Canada have increased following Trump’s re-election and inauguration, along with several of the President’s policy proposals.
Notably, Trump’s push for a 25% tariff on Canadian goods in an effort to curb the flow of fentanyl into the United States—along with referring to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau as “Governor Trudeau” in an apparent veiled jab suggesting Canada should become the 51st state—has left liberal Canadians riled up.
Now, coffee shop owners across Canada are changing the name of their coffee as an act of defiance against Trump.
As The Washington Post reported, the move is reminiscent of an effort in the early 2000s to rename “French fries” to “freedom fries” in response to France’s opposition to the Iraq War.
William Oliveira, the owner of Toronto-based Café Belém, told the outlet that while he doesn’t want his coffee shop to be political, he believes taking a stand against Trump is important.
“It’s good for us to just, you know, stand up for being ourselves and reminding other people… that we’re not to be pushed around and bullied by others,” Oliveira stated.
He went on to claim his customers have responded positively to the change.
Patrons who order an Americano are given a lighthearted correction from employees that it is now Canadiano.
“It’s definitely me saying, ‘Hey, just in case anybody was wondering, this is where we stand on that subject: We are pro-Canadian,’” Oliveira added.
Other coffee shops, including the British Columbia-based Kicking Horse Coffee—which has been using Canadiano for almost two decades—called on other shops to adopt the new terminology.
Elizabeth Watson, the owner of Palisades Café in British Columbia, said she was inspired to join the movement after a customer sent her the post.
“It felt bold and brave,” Watson said.
“We aren’t necessarily aiming to be political, but we love the idea of really just supporting Canadian pride.”
Her café placed makeshift signs over the existing menu, replacing Americano with Canadiano.
Watson said the move has been well received by customers and vowed to continue using the term.
The name change highlights growing friction between the U.S. and Canada following the proposed tariffs under Trump.
President Trump defended his policies, arguing that U.S. subsidies to Canada “make no sense” and suggested Canadians may be open to becoming part of the United States.
