Special Counsel Jack Smith Drops Trump’s Charges after Burning through $50 Million in Doomed Trials

Special Counsel Jack Smith has finally dropped the 2020 election interference case against Trump after burning through record amounts of taxpayers’ money during the former President’s politically motivated witchhunt.

Biden’s Attorney General Merrick Garland appointed Smith as a special counsel to avoid playing a prominent role in Trump’s prosecution to conceal the fact that it was a government-sanctioned witch hunt intended to keep Trump out of the White House.

Subsequently, Garland-appointed Smith swiftly indicted Trump for the alleged attempt to overturn the 2020 election and hoarding documents at his Mar-a-Lago residence.

Trump heroically fought the charges for the remaining time until his landslide victory that brought down the baseless prosecutions. Yet, despite all the dollars Biden’s DOJ threw at Smith and the political cover accorded, the special counsel could not conclusively secure Trump’s conviction.

Meanwhile, Smith has also dropped an appeal related to Trump’s alleged mishandling of classified documents at his Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida before leaving office in 2021.

With the witchhunt out of the way, Smith and his team are expected to resign before Trump returns to the White House. The returning president had promised to fire Smith within two seconds of taking office. However, Smith and his team planned to leave office before Trump could crack the whip and spare themselves the embarrassment after the sham trials.

In other news, details have emerged about the wanton waste of taxpayers’ money Smith and team burned through during the doomed prosecution of the incoming President Trump.

According to records obtained by Newsweek through a Freedom of Information (FOIA) Request, Smith burned through $50 million during the witchhunt, which has clearly failed.

Additionally, the media outlet faced a major roadblock as the special counsel was not officially part of the Department of Justice, highlighting the extent of political maneuvering involved in Trump’s politically motivated prosecution.

The official records obtained by Newsweek found that Smith’s office spent $5,428,579, between November 18, 2022, and March 31, 2023, including $2,672,783 worth of employees’ salaries and benefits, $456,808 worth of rent, communications, and utilities, and $1,881,926 worth of contractual services.

Of the contractual amount, $1,674,947 was squandered on litigation and investigative support, $143,493 on IT and computer services, and $63,151 on transcription.

The Department of Justice also spent $3,818,818 on supporting Smith’s office, including the special counsel’s bodyguards.

In six months between April 1, 2023, and September 30, 2023, Smith directly spent $7,379,089, while the DOJ indirectly spent $7,277,783. Within six months of Smith’s appointment, the DOJ and Smith’s office spent $14,656,872.

Smith’s spending during the period went to salaries and benefits ($4,779,835), rent, communications, and utilities ($730,662), travel expenses ($410,138), and contractual services ( $1,235,113). Between October 1, 2023, and March 31, 2024, Smith’s office also spent  $6,630,206 in direct expenses.

While the breakdown of Smith’s expenditure is mind-boggling, it highlights how well-oiled Trump’s witchhunt machine was under the Biden administration.
