American Rheinmetall Delivers First Lynx XM30 Prototype in Major Bradley Replacement Push [WATCH]

American Rheinmetall has delivered the first Lynx XM30 prototype to the Army, marking a major step in the service’s long running campaign to replace the M2 Bradley Fighting Vehicle.

The company announced the milestone Tuesday as the next generation combat vehicle effort moves from digital plans toward physical trials.

The first machine is expected to begin testing after completing required safety checks.

Seven more prototypes are scheduled to arrive later this year, giving Army evaluators and soldiers a broader fleet for an ambitious assessment program focused on performance, safety, and battlefield utility.

The work falls under an Engineering and Manufacturing Development contract valued at roughly $764 million.

That agreement is designed to carry the XM30 from digital design through validation, turning concepts and computer models into vehicles that can be examined under demanding real world conditions.

Rheinmetall designed the Lynx XM30 for a battlefield increasingly dominated by unmanned systems, electronic warfare, rapidly changing sensors, and new threats.

That is the right problem set to address, because tomorrow’s armored formations cannot afford to enter combat with yesterday’s technology frozen inside them.


A modular open architecture sits at the center of the design, according to the company.

The approach is intended to let the Army integrate fresh technology more quickly while the vehicle remains in service, rather than waiting through the sort of slow modernization cycle Washington bureaucracy too often produces.


The prototype also features what Rheinmetall describes as a first of its kind hybrid electric powertrain.

It combines a conventional engine with electric power, bringing a new propulsion approach to the Army’s future mechanized force as operational requirements continue to evolve.

After the initial safety process, soldiers will put the prototypes through exercises built to simulate combat.

Their direct involvement matters, since crews and infantry troops who must fight from the vehicle can expose strengths and shortcomings that polished presentations and contractor graphics will never reveal.

At the same time, the Army plans to conduct technical testing while troops train on additional prototypes.

American Rheinmetall CEO Matt Warnick described the approach as a “parallel evaluation timeline,” allowing engineering analysis and soldier experience to advance together instead of moving through separate, drawn out phases.

That parallel structure should give evaluators a fuller view of how the XM30 performs both as a complex machine and as a fighting platform.

It also puts multiple vehicles into the hands of troops, where reliability, usability, and practical combat value can face serious scrutiny.

The current competition took shape in 2023, when the Army selected American Rheinmetall and General Dynamics Land Systems for the XM30 design phase.

Both companies are working to produce a successor worthy of replacing the Bradley, a platform that has served for decades and earned a formidable combat record.

The Bradley entered service in the 1980s and has remained a central part of Army armored formations ever since.

Replacing it is no small assignment, because the next vehicle must carry troops, support maneuver forces, survive modern threats, and remain adaptable across years of technological change.

American Rheinmetall based its XM30 design on the company’s Lynx KF41.

The delivered prototype therefore reflects an established vehicle family while incorporating features aimed at the Army’s specific vision for a future infantry fighting vehicle, including digital flexibility and the unusual powertrain configuration.

Drones and electronic warfare have made armored combat more complicated, not less relevant, as fighting overseas has repeatedly demonstrated.

Vehicles must now operate amid persistent aerial observation, hostile jamming, precision weapons, and an accelerating contest between sensors and countermeasures, all while keeping soldiers mobile and protected.

The Army will have to determine whether the Lynx architecture can meet those demands consistently and at scale.

That means evaluating not only raw performance, but also maintenance needs, crew workload, integration potential, mobility, and the vehicle’s ability to keep pace with future battlefield technology.

The delivery does not decide the competition, and extensive testing remains before the Army chooses its path.

Still, moving the first Lynx XM30 prototype into Army hands is tangible progress in a yearslong replacement effort that now has steel, systems, and soldier evaluations behind the promises.
