Breaking: Biden Commutes Federal Death Row Sentences of 37 of 40 Inmates Involved in Grievous Acts

Outgoing President Joe Biden has continued his momentum of reckless clemencies, this time commuting the sentences of 37 of 40 federal death row inmates condemned for various grievous crimes.

The fact that three were excluded from the commutations shows that Biden did apparently draw the line somewhere – and that makes it look even worse for him considering how reprehensible the crimes committed were of those he just saved.

They include individuals convicted of killing children, police and military officers, and wiping off complete families.

Biden’s communications aim to prevent the incoming Trump administration from carrying out the executions. Trump was considering extending the federal death sentence to child traffickers, drug dealers, and individuals who kill law enforcement officers.

“In good conscience, I cannot stand back and let a new administration resume executions that I halted,” he said in a brief White House statement.

Biden explained that his commutations were part of his efforts to reduce violent crime and ensure an effective judicial system. “I’ve dedicated my career to reducing violent crime and ensuring a fair and effective justice system. Today, I am commuting the sentences of 37 of the 40 individuals on federal death row to life sentences without the possibility of parole.”

In 2021, Biden’s attorney general, Merrick Garland, imposed a moratorium on federal executions, citing various reasons, including racial disparities. Fifteen of the commutation recipients were Black, 6 were Latinos, one was Asian, and the rest were white. The three individuals exempted were also white.

However, Biden’s commutations exempted individuals involved in terrorism and mass murders involving hate crimes. “These commutations are consistent with the moratorium my Administration has imposed on federal executions, in cases other than terrorism and hate-motivated mass murder.”

Robert Bowers, who was convicted of the 2018 Tree of Life Synagogue mass shooting, claiming 11 lives, was exempted from Biden’s commutation. Also exempted were Dylann Roof, who took the lives of nine Black parishioners at Emanuel AME Church in Charleston, South Carolina, in 2015, and Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, responsible for the 2013 Boston Marathon bombing that killed 3 people and wounded about 260 others. In other words, exempted were two white supremacists and a terrorist who carried out an attack in one of the most liberal states in the country.

Claiming that he unmistakably condemns the murders and “grievous acts” that caused “unimaginable and irreparable loss,” Biden criticized the use of the death sentence to punish extremely violent offenders.

“But guided by my conscience and my experience as a public defender, chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, Vice President, and now President, I am more convinced than ever that we must stop the use of the death penalty at the federal level.”

While Biden exempted terror and hate crime-related mass murders, he commuted the sentences of others involved in mass killings, including Ricardo Sanchez, Jr., and Daniel Troya, who killed an entire family.

Thomas Sanders also shot a mother, kidnapped and brutally murdered her 12-year-old daughter, while drug kingpin Kaboni Savage killed 12 people, including a family of six.

Commenting on Biden’s commutations, Rep Dan Meuser (R-PA-9) called out the outgoing president’s reckless action. “President Biden’s decision to commute the sentences of 37 federal death row inmates is not just senseless—it’s an outrageous example of this administration’s upside down and backwards ideology.”

While Biden boasts of the largest clemencies in the modern history of the United States, they are usually shrouded in controversy.

The outgoing president recently pardoned 39 individuals and commuted the sentences of 1,500 others. The commutation recipients included a corrupt judge involved in the “cash-for-kids” scheme that saw juveniles, including first offenders, receive harsh sentences for minor offenses in exchange for kickbacks.

Biden also pardoned his son of all federal crimes between 2014 and 2024 after convincing Americans he would not intervene while still considering it.

He also pardoned 2,000 former military officers involved in same-sex relationships contrary to the military’s Uniform Code of Military Justice’s Article 125.

Meanwhile, Trump has promised to pardon January 6 protesters on Day One. Other potential Trump presidential pardon recipients could include pro-life activists jailed under the Freedom of Access to Clinic Entrances (FACE) Act for blockading abortion clinics.

Biden could also potentially issue more presidential pardons to his political allies, likely including former Rep. Liz Cheney, accused of witness tampering in the January 6 trials. If found guilty, she could spend up to 20 years in a federal prison. Others could include Dr. Anthony Fauci and Adam Schiff.

  1. It seems the only one deserving of the Federal death penalty is not Hunter Biden but Matt Gaetz. I am sick of the double standard.

The leniency towards one should be equally distributed.
