Colorado “Counselor of the Year” Accused of Sexually Assaulting Student More Than 100 Times

A Colorado high school counselor once honored as “counselor of the year” is accused of sexually assaulting a female student more than 100 times during a series of so-called “sleepovers” at her home, according to police and court records, as reported by The New York Post.

Cassandra Poncelow, 40, worked in the Poudre School District in Fort Collins from 2007 to 2024.

She was arrested Tuesday and is facing multiple felony charges, including sexual assault, sexual assault on a child by one in a position of trust, criminal attempt to commit sexual exploitation of children, and aggravated sexual assault on a client by a psychotherapist.

Court documents obtained by 9News state that Poncelow first met the victim in her school counseling office. The victim, who is now an adult, told investigators in July that she was brought to Poncelow’s home for “sleepovers” where she was assaulted more than 100 times over several years.

The victim said the repeated assaults left her feeling suicidal, but she alleged Poncelow threatened her to remain silent. According to a police report cited by CBS News, Poncelow told the girl, “If you tell anyone, I’ll kill myself.”

Investigators also said Poncelow later admitted to having feelings for the student while acknowledging the relationship was inappropriate. “Lack of boundary, not okay. The power difference, not okay. It was wrong,” she allegedly told police.

Poncelow was named Colorado’s “counselor of the year” by the Colorado School Counseling Association in 2016 and was a finalist for the American School Counselor of the Year award in 2018, according to the Coloradoan.

Her LinkedIn profile indicates she worked as a part-time counselor and engagement specialist from 2011 to 2024. Most recently, she served as a freshman counselor at the Center for High School Success.

The school announced she was “immediately placed on leave” following her arrest.

The Colorado Department of Human Services was first notified about the allegations in 2023. However, at that time the victim denied any sexual activity with Poncelow, and the case was closed. The investigation was reopened when the victim agreed to come forward in July.

Poncelow is currently being held at the Larimer County Jail on a $500,000 cash-only bond.

A spokesman for the Poudre School District described the allegations as “deeply troubling” and confirmed the district is cooperating fully with law enforcement.

The case remains under investigation.

  1. Given the Nature of the prototypical Colorado Democrat, It’s most likely that they were well aware of that molestation and it became the motivtion for the dirtbag to receive her Honor in the first place!

  2. The real question is how much did the school know and when did they know it? This is unlikely an isolated incident. I love this kind of report. I have worked in public schools for decades, so I’m always sarcastically amused at the way teachers are held up as paragons. They are not. It is never “for the children.” Teachers are over paid and under worked and allowed to politicize their classrooms, engaging in indoctrination not education. Teachers who violate students are often quietly allowed to move to other schools where they repeat their violations. Knowing what I know, I opted to homeschool. I took my kid to a school playground while it was empty and the kids were in classes. I was told by the principal that I was not allowed on school property because I was unvetted, they had no background check on me. It would have been laughable if it wasn’t so insane and insufferable.
