Investigation: Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer Sought $15 Million Taxpayer-Funded Grant for Donor

Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s involvement in directing a shady $20 million legislative grant to a donor and political appointee is prompting demands for a federal investigation.

Detroit businesswoman Fay Beydoun hosted a Whitmer fundraiser at her Farmington Hills home in September 2021 that raised $13,500, around the same time Beydoun was working to land state funding for an international business accelerator, Bridge Michigan reports.

Beydoun, who personally donated more than $16,000 to Whitmer’s gubernatorial campaigns, was appointed by the governor in 2019 to serve on the 15-member executive committee that steers the Michigan Economic Development Corporation.

About five months after the fundraiser, Whitmer included a $15 million grant program in her Fiscal Year 2023 budget recommendations, prompting an email from MEDC CEO Quentin Messer to state officials congratulating Beydoun on the funding, according to The Detroit News.
