Jack Ciattarelli Slams Mikie Sherrill’s Debate Attack, Plans Legal Action for Defamation

New Jersey Republican gubernatorial candidate Jack Ciattarelli announced plans to file a defamation lawsuit against Democratic opponent Rep. Mikie Sherrill after she accused him during a televised debate of profiting from the opioid epidemic and “killing tens of thousands of people.”

As The New York Post reported, the lawsuit, expected to be filed next week, stems from remarks Sherrill made during the final gubernatorial debate on Wednesday night. Ciattarelli’s campaign called the comments “clearly defamatory” and said they crossed a line in political discourse.

“Sherrill claimed – twice – that Jack Ciattarelli ‘killed tens of thousands of people, including children,’ a clearly defamatory attack that shocked the moderators, press, and public alike,” Ciattarelli campaign strategist Chris Russell said in a statement to NJ.com.

“In a time where political violence and violent rhetoric are becoming all too prevalent, Mikie Sherrill baselessly and recklessly accusing a political opponent of mass murder in a televised debate crosses the line,” Russell added.

During one of the most heated exchanges of the evening, Sherrill accused Ciattarelli of making millions through his former medical publishing company, alleging he “worked with some of the worst offenders and said that opioids were safe.”

She continued, “Putting out propaganda, publishing their propaganda while tens of thousands of New Jerseyans died.” Later in the debate, Sherrill said Ciattarelli was “trying to divert from the fact you killed tens of thousands of people by printing your misinformation, your propaganda.”

Sherrill’s accusations referred to a controversy from Ciattarelli’s 2021 gubernatorial campaign involving training materials his company published years earlier. Critics at the time claimed the content contained pharmaceutical industry talking points downplaying the risks of opioid use.

Ciattarelli has repeatedly denied any wrongdoing, saying his company was one of many that produced continuing education materials for medical professionals based on industry data available at the time.

His campaign has described Sherrill’s comments as false, malicious, and designed to mislead voters days before Election Day.

Legal experts in New Jersey say Ciattarelli could pursue damages if he can prove the statements were made with “actual malice,” meaning Sherrill either knew her claims were false or acted with reckless disregard for the truth.

The debate was the final face-off between the two candidates before voters head to the polls. Election Day in New Jersey is Tuesday, November 5.

Sherrill’s campaign has not issued a formal response to the lawsuit threat as of Friday evening.

  1. I injured my foot, 12 stitches. The ER didn’t give me anything for pain. Why? The opoid epidemic issue. Pain killers and any other medication should be between the doctor and patient, not a government liberal hack that knows nothing about you.
