Rep. Elise Stefanik is emerging as the clear frontrunner for the Republican nomination in the 2026 New York gubernatorial race, securing broad institutional support across the state and leaving rival candidates with limited paths forward, according to party officials and recent reporting.
Stefanik, 41, has been widely discussed as a potential candidate for governor, as reported by The Western Journal.

Her profile within New York politics has grown steadily, and she is now consolidating support from GOP county chairs, state lawmakers, and Conservative Party leaders.
According to Fox News, Stefanik “has opened a commanding lead in the New York Republican primary for governor,” receiving endorsements across the state.
The outlet reports that Stefanik has already secured more than 75 percent of the New York Republican Party’s weighted vote.
Party officials said the level of early support places her in a dominant position and leaves Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman, her most prominent potential challenger, with “virtually no path to the nomination.”
Under New York state election rules, rivals who do not receive sufficient support from party leadership must gather signatures to qualify for the ballot.
Any Republican seeking to challenge Stefanik would need to collect at least 15,000 signatures from registered GOP voters to appear on the primary ballot.
Republican insiders described Stefanik’s early advantage as “unprecedented,” given how early she has consolidated support.
Bernadette Breslin, a representative for Stefanik, told Fox News, “According to two independent polls, Elise is the strongest candidate against Hochul and has the highest name ID and most favorable polling.”
Breslin added:
“Her strong support across the state only continues to grow as she earns more endorsements from prominent GOP leaders, including 40 out of New York’s 45 Conservative Party organizations. New York Republicans are wholly united behind the common goal of firing Kathy Hochul to save New York, and they have entrusted their full confidence in Elise to do so.”
If Stefanik secures the nomination, she is expected to face incumbent Gov. Kathy Hochul, who supported Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani during the recent New York City election cycle.

Mamdani’s victory was seen by many Republicans as a troubling sign for the city’s political direction.
Despite Stefanik’s significant lead, Blakeman has not withdrawn. His support base remains concentrated upstate and in Long Island, according to GOP officials.
The New York GOP is expected to formalize its primary lineup later in the cycle.

Have no doubt, the Republicans will have a nasty primary and weaken their effort. They just can’t help themselves.
