Newly released dash cam footage shows South Carolina’s sole Democratic candidate for governor, William “Mullins” McLeod, being arrested in downtown Charleston while wearing only underwear and shoes, as reported by The New York Post.
The 53-year-old attorney, a married father of four, was recorded making profane remarks, using the n-word, and referring to himself as both “God” and “Superman.”

The arrest occurred in May but came to light Tuesday after the video was obtained through a Freedom of Information Act request, just one day after McLeod formally entered the gubernatorial race.
According to a Charleston Police Department report, officers encountered McLeod “yelling at the top of his lungs” and exhibiting behavior “typical of an individual under the influence of a stimulant narcotic.” His eyes were described as “extremely bloodshot and highly dilated.”
In the video, McLeod refused to identify himself, telling officers, “It doesn’t matter, my friend, trust me. I’m one of the most just humans to ever walk this soil,” before adding, “Superman sounds good.”
The footage also captures McLeod making threats toward political figures, including what appeared to be a reference to Republican Attorney General Alan Wilson, who announced his own gubernatorial bid earlier this year. “I’m gonna kick your f–king teeth in,” McLeod says at one point.
McLeod repeatedly referenced his upcoming campaign during the encounter and made multiple profane statements, along with using the n-word at least twice. He also threatened to harm a political opponent.
Upon arrival at the jail, McLeod refused to exit the patrol car, telling officers, “No, I’m not doing it, no. I’m not getting out of this car. It’s time to go to bed.” He was ultimately removed by force and booked shortly before 1 a.m.

The arrest report does not specify whether McLeod was tested for drugs. He faces misdemeanor disorderly conduct charges. McLeod previously served two terms as chairman of the Charleston County Democratic Party and ran unsuccessfully for governor in 2010.
In response to the video’s release, South Carolina Democratic Party Chair Christale Spain issued a statement urging McLeod to withdraw from the race.
“After reviewing the transcript of the dash cam footage from his recent arrest, it is clear that Mr. McLeod is navigating profound challenges and should focus on his mental and emotional well-being instead of a campaign for governor,” Spain said.
McLeod is currently the only Democrat in the race to replace Governor Henry McMaster when his term ends.
